In Step With DC
Competition Team – The Thrill of Victory, the Hours of Dedication
Written by Erin Sforza on February 14, 2017

By now I’m sure most of our DC families are familiar with at least some of the members of our Competition Team, but you might not know how much dedication these amazing young dancers possess.

Competition Team begins with the first official rehearsal of the year in August, preceded by a parents meeting for new team members. Unlike many other studios, our team requires no audition to be a part of the team. Dancers will all be included in at least one dance (usually a large group number) and may audition for other dances that they would like to be a part of. Miss Mary truly believes that being part of a team, a family really, and making a contribution is a very important life skill. Competition Team dancers work hard, develop discipline, work ethic, an understanding of personal responsibility and boost their confidence with every new achievement.

They take classes during the week to improve technique and skill, and then on the weekend they rehearse for several hours with meal breaks. They participate in roughly three regional competitions every year, Nationals and may even dance on a cruise ship or in Walt Disney World! They spend a lot of time together, they bond over shared successes and cheer for each other. They also learn sportsmanship and how to be a truly good competitor. Miss Mary even has Safety Sally, who always dresses for competitions, and carries a host of helpful dance supplies that she is more than happy to share with anyone in need. You’ll frequently see DCCT parents and dancers assisting other schools and dancers in all kinds of competition emergencies.

If that wasn’t enough to keep them busy, besides their school work and competition team, many of our DCCT members are also in our Recital Company that performs the recital’s opening number and they are part of our Teacher Training Program, helping our younger dancers to enjoy every minute of their classes.

Our Competition Team just finished a fantastic first performance at the Headliners Competition at Port Chester High School from Friday Feb. 10th – Sunday Feb. 12th.  You can click here to see the results, and head to our Facebook page for an album of photos from their dress rehearsal at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School.

If you are interested in supporting our Competition dancers at their next two local competitions the dates and address for each venue is below, and make sure to keep an eye out on our social media pages for the latest Competition info and behind the scenes photos. You can use #DCCT2017 to send them some love as they get ready for each competition!
