Frequently Asked Questions
First Steps is a dance and movement program designed for preschool-aged children ages 3 to 4. It blends the structure of an early childhood classroom with the creativity of dance, helping young dancers build social, emotional, and physical skills in a fun, age-appropriate environment.
First Steps is perfect for children who are 3 or 4 years old.
Parents and caregivers may wait in our welcoming lobby areas, so they are always close by. While dancers participate in class on their own, you can observe through studio observation windows, live TV screens, or our secure live stream app—perfect for sharing with family or watching from the waiting area.
That’s totally normal! Many young dancers take a few classes to settle in, and that’s okay. We specialize in gentle transitions and always move at your child’s pace. Our goal is to create a welcoming experience where every child feels safe, supported, and proud of their progress—whether they jump in right away or need a little extra time.
Girls should wear a leotard and tights—any color, any style. Boys should wear dance pants or shorts and a fitted t-shirt. Ballet shoes are required for this class, and the ties should be tucked in for safety. If your child is in Preschool 2 or Combo classes, tap shoes will also be needed.
First Steps focuses on age-appropriate dance movements, musicality, and coordination, while also helping dancers learn classroom skills like listening, taking turns, and following directions. The class is designed to be both fun and foundational, supporting your child’s development in a positive, low-pressure environment.
Yes! First Steps dancers are invited to perform in our June recital, which is a wonderful way to build confidence and celebrate all they’ve learned. Recital participation is optional. Costumes are ordered in December, and tickets go on sale in May.
Absolutely! We believe in transparency and connection. Parents are always welcome to observe class. Our Islip location features observation windows, our Bay Shore studio offers a live TV viewing screen, and we also provide secure access to our private live stream app—so you can watch from anywhere or share your child’s dance moments with family near and far.
