In Step With DC
DC Recital “Must Haves”
Written by Erin Sforza on May 24, 2019

We are so close to recital weekend! I’m getting really excited (this is my favorite time of year at the studio) but I know that getting ready for recital can be very daunting, especially for first-time recital students and parents so here are some suggestions for what you need to help make the week/weekend as smooth as possible.

  • A plan and a list: I am a BIG planner (seriously you should see my vacation packing list!) and I think that if you sit down and work out the logistics of both dress rehearsal and recital it will give you the sense that you can calmly navigate what can be a hectic week. I like to write out a list of what is needed for dress rehearsal and make sure to prep the night before. I always set everything out to “grab and go” when it’s needed. The great thing about dress rehearsal is that you get to see if there is anything that you might have overlooked so you will be able to add that in for recital. This is also the time to make sure that you give yourself enough travel time to get to Holy Trinity High School and that you know how to get to the proper entrance on Newbridge Road. You should aim to arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled arrival time, just to make sure you have a buffer for traffic.
  • Garment Bag(s): These are a life-saver! If your dancer has only one dance in the recital, they may not be necessary (although they are great for post-recital storage), but for dancers with multiple numbers a garment bag allows you protect the costume and easily keep track of all accessories and make-up used specifically for that number. No digging in a crowded dance bag for the hair accessory seconds before they have to be on stage! Many garment bags, including the ones we have in studio have a pocket where you can create a card with your dancer’s name and list the items that should be included so you can easily do a last minute check before leaving for the venue.
  • Baby Wipes/Make-up Wipes: They do so much more than correcting make-up mishaps and are always helpful to have on hand.
  • Back-up Tights: You’d be surprised at how often these are needed and they can be tucked into your garment bag.
  • Extra hair ties/hairspray/brush/etc.: Whether a last minute touch-up or complete change of hairstyle you will be happy you brought these items with you.
  • Excitement and Positive Vibes: There is nothing that your dancer needs more than your support, encouragement, and positive disposition. Planning and being ready can reduce any kind of stress for you, which will definitely be a plus for your dancer who will be sure to have tons of feelings fluttering around on recital day.

Here’s to a stress-free and enjoyable recital week!
