In Step With DC
A First-Timers Guide to Recital
Written by Erin Sforza on May 29, 2018

I’m sure by now that all of our first-time recital parents are a little overwhelmed at everything it takes to get ready for recital. We’ve put together a short guide to let you know the ins and outs of your first recital.

  • Make sure to grab a Final Recital Checklist at the Reception Desk at the studio.  It will give you a run-down of things you should complete to prepare for Dress Rehearsal Week including painting your shoes, making sure you have purchased flowers, stars, and t-shirts.
  • It’s incredibly helpful to prep your costume (steaming the tutu, tack stitching the accessories) prior to Dress Rehearsal, this way you can see how everything looks and holds up on stage and make any corrections needed.
  • Paint your dancer’s shoes before Dress Rehearsal so they are the correct color for the costume and if needed you can touch up any areas that scuff before recital.
  • Don’t forget that Dress Rehearsal is the time to take tons of pictures and video, and you can take individual photos of your dancer as time allows. You can also only bring 2 adults and siblings to the Dress Rehearsal.
  • Try to arrive a bit early to the Recital to give yourself an opportunity to find parking and not have to rush to drop off your dancer.
  • Make sure that your dancer is dressed in their costume (or first costume) when arriving, and if they have multiple dances, make sure that their second costume is brought in with them and has all accessories and their shoes for the next number. You should have received an email letting you know what area they will be changing in for the recital if they have multiple dances.
  • The parent who drops off your dancer will receive a hand stamp, and they will be the only parent allowed to pick up your dancer at the end of the recital and for the safety of our dancers there are no exceptions to that policy.
  • When entering the auditorium please have your ticket ready to scan, and remember to have the whole page with you.
  • We will have tables in the lobby for recital day ticket purchases, dancewear, recital gifts, stars, and flower pick-up. There may be a small amount of bouquets available for purchase but they are on a first come first served basis.
  • Your dancer may leave the cafeteria to watch the rest of the show, but anyone older than preschool will need their own ticket. If they are participating in the finale they will need to return to the cafeteria 3 numbers before the finale. Dancers may not leave the cafeteria and return multiple times or before the finale drop off time.
  • Don’t forget to take some pictures of your stars on our red carpet and post them to our social media pages!

We hope that you will really enjoy your first Dance Connection recital, and that it will be the first of many to come! If you have any other questions about the upcoming big day for your dancer please do not hesitate to stop by the reception desk at the studio, call or email and we will be happy to help you!
