Class Spotlight: Dance Enrichment
Written by Erin Sforza on September 28, 2018

We all know the classic dance styles that classes are offered for; Ballet, Jazz, and Tap. These seem to be the foundation that every dance student builds off of, and within them are other stylized versions to be learned as dancers advance in their training.  Dance Connection offers many other classes that further our students’ education and give them a broader understanding of all that dance has to offer.

One of the classes that is a fantastic option for any dancer is our Dance Enrichment class. This class will help to round out our students’ training with a varied curriculum that will keep them engaged and having fun along the way. They will get an introduction to different dance styles and techniques, improvisation and much more!

One of my favorite parts of Dance Enrichment is the emphasis on proper warm-up. Stretching and strength training especially through resistance training and even the use of a stability ball help to teach our students how to prevent injuries through strength and proper preparation. This is absolutely essential for a successful career in dance, but it also teaches the importance of caring for yourself properly and the importance of preparation which translate to every aspect of life in general.

Dance Enrichment also focuses on learning tumbling and some acrobatics that can be added into a dancer’s skill set to enhance the quality of their performances. These skills are walked through step by step with the support of our teachers so that no matter what skill level your dancer may be, they will be able to progress and develop along with their classmates.

Over the summer I was able to observe the class, and I have to say I loved the atmosphere and the way the students were engaged even through games to learn new skills. They played a game of what I can only describe as “Choreography Telephone” where they split into teams and sat in a line. The first dancer then taught the dancer behind them in line a piece of choreography and they would teach it to the next person, and so on until the final dancer performed the choreography for the instructor and the whole group could observe the change from the original to the end result. This is a great way to learn the skill of quickly picking up choreography and also teaching choreography to others.

Dance Enrichment is a great class that will help your dancer to learn new skills, develop good dance habits, and expand on their dance knowledge. You can join us on Monday nights with Miss Tiffany if you are interested! This non-recital class is for students ages 7 & up who are currently studying both Ballet and Jazz.
