How Dying Light 2 Stay Human looks and feels on PS5

In the review, we talked in detail about the plot and gameplay of the brand new parkour action game Dying Light 2, went through the bugs and shortcomings of localization, noted the strengths and weaknesses of the game. Do not forget to mention the performance on the PC. And now we will tell you how online game from the developer Friv2Online behaves on the consoles of the current and past generations.

While on PC players are free to customize the graphics in detail, on next-gen consoles, Dying Light 2 has only three presets available:

"Resolution Priority", in which the game runs at 30 fps with a resolution close to 4K ;
"Performance Priority", in which players get a stable 60 fps, but the picture resolution drops down to 1080p;
"Quality Priority", which turns on ray tracing for shadows, the frame rate is 30 fps, and the image resolution is reduced to 1080p.
The choice of preset depends on the player's priorities - whether he wants to play at high resolution or prefer good performance. According to subjective impressions, in the 4K resolution mode, the picture becomes too clear, which is somehow not very comfortable. A light "soap" seemed to me more pleasant, and 60 fps for such a dynamic game is a necessary minimum; at 30 frames per second, the control becomes very viscous and uncomfortable, and fast movement around the location begins to sway.


The performance mode works best on a 1080p TV, where the blurring of the picture will not be very noticeable, and the frame rate will remain comfortable.

In turn, the quality mode could be recommended to those who appreciate the most realistic picture - ray tracing for shadows significantly improves image quality: the grass becomes more voluminous, and the lighting in buildings is close to reality. However, 1080p resolution and 30 fps work spoil the positive impressions of graphic beauties.

Dying Light 2 loads very quickly on consoles, supports surround sound and DualSense gamepad effects. True, there are not as many of the latter as we would like: the vibration is weakly expressed, and the resistance of the triggers is almost not felt. The only useful effect is that when the character's weapon becomes unusable, the trigger rattles when hit, which signals the need for an early replacement.

Serious bugs in the friv game could not be found, but a couple of times I was "lucky" to get stuck in the objects of the environment - fortunately, the title detects such problems and "pushes" the character to freedom.

We didn't explore Dying Light 2 on Xbox Series consoles, but Digital Foundry did it for us. According to experts, on Series X in "Resolution Priority" mode, the game produces a slightly higher resolution than on PS5 : 3456x1944 pixels on SX versus 3200x1800 pixels on PS5. Otherwise, there are no differences between the versions for the two consoles, and it is very difficult to notice the difference in practice.

Xbox Series S received only one graphics mode: with 30 fps and 1080p resolution, without ray tracing. Players will get consistent frame rates, but for obvious reasons, playing on a 4K TV with this console is not recommended.

Digital Foundry also tested the title on PS4 and Xbox One consoles. According to them, the performance on the platforms of the outgoing generation is acceptable, and the disaster, as in the case of Cyberpunk 2077, did not happen.

The base versions of the consoles play the friv game at 864p resolution and with graphics settings that match the "low" preset on the PC. But with a stable 30 frames per second, with rare drawdowns.

On PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, players can look forward to 1080p resolution with graphics settings that match the "medium" preset on PC. The frame rate is the same - 30 fps.

At the same time, Digital Foundry notes that pastgen consoles have low texture resolution, less detailed shadows, and annoying tearing - horizontal image breaks. Nothing tragic: given that Dying Light 2 Stay Human was developed for PS4 and Xbox One from the very beginning, you should expect performance on these consoles to be good.

In the review, we mentioned the frame rate and stability of the PC version of the project, but now we will talk about a more detailed analysis from the same Digital Foundry. According to experts, it was this version that turned out to be the most advanced in terms of technology.

So, only on a PC is global illumination implemented using ray tracing, which significantly transforms the picture - so much so that there is a difference of a whole generation between RT turned off and activated. It looks very cool, but it makes high appetites for computer resources: if you turn on all the effects to the maximum, it is not possible to achieve 60 fps in 4K resolution with DLSS even on a system with an Intel Core i9-10900K processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card.

The experts also talked about how to set up Dying Light 2 on different PC builds in order to achieve the best balance of picture quality and frame rate.
