In Step With DC
It’s Recital Company Audition Time!!!
Written by Erin Sforza on January 5, 2021

Happy New Year everyone! The studio is open and we ready to welcome everyone back from the holidays. Everyone looks forward in January, and when we do we see our recital on the horizon. One of the first things we always do in January is audition for our Recital Company Production, and this year we’re taking it to a fun and spooky place! The auditions are this Sunday, January 10th to be a part of Halloweentown! You can see a video of a past production below.

Our Recital Company is another performance opportunity that Dance Connection provides to its students beyond their regular classes’ recital numbers. Every year students are able to experience an audition setting and learn what it is like to pick up new choreography quickly in varying styles and be reviewed for a part. No matter the outcome, we make sure that the audition is both fun and a valuable learning experience for everyone. The company rehearses once a week, usually on Friday, but there are a few weekend rehearsals.

There are a few requirements, both for the audition and the company itself. Dancers need to arrive ready to dance in all black dance attire with tan tights, and black jazz shoes with their hair pulled back away from their face. Company members are required to take both Ballet and Jazz classes, but you can add any additional classes after being accepted into the company. Private lessons and tutoring are available to help prepare, just ask your teachers about when these can be scheduled. As a member of this company you will also be evaluated on your class attendance as well as your overall attitude while in your weekly classes.

Here’s a quick checklist with everything you will need to audition:

  • Fill out your audition form here. Be sure to complete it by Sat. Jan. 9th!
  • Arrange for a private lesson or tutoring if you would like.
  • Make sure to rest the night before, have a good breakfast the day of the audition, and give yourself plenty of time to get to the studio.
  • Evaluate if you are ready to make the commitment to the company. Auditions can be stressful. It’s best to know beforehand that you will be able to handle any pressure you may feel and accept the outcome of the audition.

If you cannot make the audition date, you can book a private lesson to audition within one week of the audition date.  Whatever age you are on February 1, 2021 is the company you try out for.

The Teen/Senior Company (ages 11 & up) auditions will be from 10:00am – 12:15pm, and the Petite/Junior Companies (ages 7-10) will audition from 12:45 – 2:30pm. Those who have never auditioned for the recital company before may want to attend a parent/dancer meeting to be held at 12:30pm.

If you are cast in the company, there will be a $235 production fee due February 1st.  This fee is used to cover the recital company’s expenses, such as additional facility maintenance, heat, a/c, electricity, choreographer and production staff salaries, sets, props, etc.

Recital Company is a great opportunity for dancers looking to gain more performance experience and a ton of fun from beginning to end. We hope to see you at auditions!
