In Step With DC
On Pointe: DC’s Prima Ballerinas
We’ve been highlighting some of Dance Connections class offerings that go beyond Ballet, Tap, and Jazz. Though Pointe classes are still part of the Ballet curriculum, the classes are very advanced and it takes a lot of work to get there!
Schools of thought differ on the minimum acceptable age to start Pointe training, but at Dance Connection the emphasis is placed on safety. The safety of a young and developing dancer is paramount to every decision made not just for Pointe classes, but for all classes in the studio. Generally, dancers can be evaluated for Pointe training around age 12. They would be asssessed by our teaching staff for both technique and strength, and if they are ready would begin “Pre-Pointe Training”.
“Pre-Pointe Training” is a class curriculum focused on making sure that dancers develop muscle strength in their legs and core and are properly trained to begin supporting their entire body weight on their toes, which is no easy task. The development may seem incredibly slow, but it is very important that gains are incremental to minimize risk of overexerting themselves or of injury.
The results of this careful and precise training is some of the most beautiful and enjoyable performances of our recitals! Our most recent Pointe class recital performance is below!
Pointe students are required to take 2 ballet classes per week, and to have had an evaluation prior to studying.
